Amendment V:

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. " "
Pleading the fifth saves you from telling on yourself which is the main focus in the fifth amendment

In better words!!! NO I WILL NOT TELL ON MYSELF I AM INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY! To understand this amendment is to understand that you are not required to talk to the police. You as an individual can deny speaking with them until your attorney is around or until you are appointed some council.  This amendment also protects your land.

This picture goes great with the amendment. If you are not read the Miranda Warning; Speak up! This warning is to be read any time you are arrested. If not and the police gets you to talk there could be a problem.
