Amendment VIII:

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

This amendment is wrapped around crimes. When this amendment was created in 1791 they created it so they punishments would not be viewed at as excessive, cruel, and unusual. Nothing more than what is deserved of the criminal should be done. Officials should not use their power to do anything worse.
